From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1095 (with illustrated PDF version attached) Date: Sunday, February 01, 2004 10:16 AM ============================================= MPC GRAM ============================================= Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1095 Sunday February 1, 2004 Financing War By Warner Talso It is appropriate to digress at this time. If you recall we initiated a new event at the Dallas show last August. We called it "Bond Blast I" (that name got more votes than the alternative suggestion which was "Bond Drive"). We never really defined the scope in Dallas, but it was generally assumed that topics should relate to government bonds and perhaps other government mechanisms used to finance military operations. We had an excellent turn out - about 12 people. Imagine the scene. In the bourse is a table with these people gathered around with their own agenda. Several people stopped by to see what we were doing, including Neil Shafer and Lynn Knight. The primary presenter was Larry Smulczenski. He presented his collection of U.S. bonds. It was outstanding. There was a great deal of discussion. Our meeting lasted about 1.5 hours. It was definitely a success. So, now the question: Do we want to perpetuate this? How about having Bond Blast II at FEST V? Are Festers interested? To further this dialog, here are several options to consider. Time: The First Sergeant has not published the FEST V Training Schedule (and given past experience, may not do so until the day before FEST V begins). Based on what we know now and past experience, here are some suggestions: First, Friday from 1900 to 2100 (or whenever it ends). The bourse is scheduled from 1200 to 1900 and this would be right after the bourse. Before the bourse may be too early for many attendees. Second option is sometime Saturday afternoon. Last year the bourse was from 1300 to 1600, but since that moved to Friday, this may be an open spot. Third option is Saturday night about 1930 to whenever. However this competes with the poker game. Fourth option is Sunday afternoon from about 1300 to whenever. This is not attractive for those who plan on leaving right after lunch on Sunday. What are your ideas? Also, should it be a stand-alone event or can it run concurrently with something else? Does everyone want to attend and it should be a block of time such as show and tell? Regarding an agenda, I will put something together if you will help. We need volunteer topics. Larry could present as he did at Dallas. Harold has done some nice research on Canadian Bonds. AFLBs has been a hot topic. Jim Downey could present. Marcus has some excellent Eastern European bonds. Any other volunteers? Please let the First Sergeant or me know your desires and interests. Should we have Bond Blast II? If so, when? If so, suggest topics of interest. ============================================= Editorial/opinion ============================================= Please note Ski’s plea yesterday for auction items for the Fest. The Fest auction has been a highlight of the Fest for the past few years. It has provided lots of opportunities to sell some duplicates or buy some items for your collection and it has been lots of fun too. You can donate items for the auction and the proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund or you can submit items in the traditional way and keep the proceeds. ============================================= MAIL CALL ============================================= Dear Gram, Was just wondering if you have received the check for Fest V yet? I sent it out on the 20th of January and have been watching the Gram to see if it has shown up, but maybe you haven't updated this section for a while. Please advise, cause I don't want to miss out on the whole to do on a technicality or anything. Regards, Jack Hunter Dear Gram, The little dollar sign is not next to my name for the fest. Did you get the check? Gary (Who has Fours) Hicks Jack, Gary and others, You caught me again! Will work on this for Gram 1096. Editor Dear Editor, I can say that the 5 page Bank Note Reporter advertisement in the February "MPC" Issue, has generated an order that will include a MPCFest Registration fee Paid by me! David Dear David, Good job. For those of you who do not recall, David will pay the Fest registration for anyone who has a filled order of $1500 from his advertisement in the Bank Note Reporter. Editor Editor, Wow, you are number scheme is really out of whack. You skipped two numbers earlier this week, and now you bypassed issue 1090. I would understand if it was issue 1040, but that was a long time ago.
