From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Newsletter 1088 Date: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 8:51 AM ============================================= MPC GRAM ============================================= Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1088 Wednesday January 21, 2004 Dutch Occupation of Germany By Marcus Turner Over the past year I have been exhibiting the Dutch Occupation money, both the MinisterieVan Oorlog Notes and Tokens. While this exhibit has been a complete flop from a competitive perspective, I have managed to dig up a very important piece of information. Last October while conducting research to improve my exhibit I ran across the following information from the World Statesmen (an encyclopedia of nations, colonies, international and religious organizations, and other polities). They have an entire section dedicated to Germany. Of course it included the occupied areas by Britain, France, USA and the USSR, however it also included a short paragraph on the Netherlands including the specific mention of small towns and communities. The text reads as follows: “22 Mar 1949 Allies agree to let the Netherlands occupy and annex some German border territories. Annexed areas include - municipalities of Havert, Hillensberg, Millen, Süsterseel, Tüddern (Dutch: Tudderen), Wehr, parts of Höngen, Gangelt, Schumm, Saeffelen as well as Elten andHoch-Elten. 23 Apr 1949 Dutch annexation. 11 Aug 1963 Territories returned (except for minor frontier adjustments), following German agreement to pay war compensation. Landdrost of Tudderen (subordinated to the Dutch government to Sep 1951, then to the Governor of Dutch Limburg) 1949 - 1963 Hubert M.J. Dassen Landdrosten of Elten (subordinated to the Dutch government to Sep 1951, then to the Commissioner of the Queen for Gelderland) 1949 - 19.. A. Blaauboer 1961 - 1963 Baron Hans Georg Inundat van Tuyll (b. 1917) van Serooskerken” This is the first time I have ever seen specific communities associated with a “minor occupant.” I immediately found a map and started to locate these little towns. They are all adjacent to the southernmost portion of the Netherlands. If you have been to the paper money show in Valkenburg in April, you have been approximately 15 miles from where the Dutch Army occupied Germany. The following map was taken directly from my exhibit. It is a scan of a post WWII map of the German occupied areas. I mentioned that the notes were not in the 1973 Toy/Schwan because I did not know about them. The tokens were not in the 1978 Schwan/Boling because I forgot about them. I had some in my collection, but simply forgot to (find and) list them. Only two items were omitted from Remembered because of the memory problem: these tokens and Romanian war bonds.
