From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Auction analysis--#1068 your newsletter Date: Wednesday, December 10, 2003 11:57 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1068 Wednesday December 10, 2003 BARGAINS??? or ??? By Ron Waddell The current website for Lyn Knight auctions has some improvements that make auction bidding via the internet much easier and more informative. The listing with your bids and current bids (along with final bids) and an on-line invoice are just a couple of the improvements I like. Others may have these features but I don't keep up with all of them. One thing that bothers me about Knights auctions, considering only the foreign and military related notes, is the estimates and the 60% of low estimate minimum. In the St. Louis auction, and several past auctions, I listed lots that I was interested in along with catalog prices for the item. In some instances, if I bid the minimum allowed - 60% of low estimate - I would be paying full catalog or more, especially after the auction fees were added. In some cases this is valid but I thought I would check the results of the 1533 lots of MPC and foreign notes to see what the bidding showed (how good are the estimates and the catalog values). Overall, 26.4% of the lots did not sell; and of the lots sold, 63.3% had a hammer price below the low estimate. I've listed the results below and will let the readers draw their own conclusions. This data is based on the hammer price as listed on Knights web-site. The data is broken down by MPC (the first 37 lots) and those lots that were readily identifiable (by me) as listed in WWII Remembered and WWII military related (365 lots). The remainder are in one category. % of Low Estimate MPC WWII Related Foreign No Sale 2 60 343 60-69.9% 8 69 239 70-79.9% 2 60 144 80-89.9% 4 37 92 90-99.9% 1 16 42 100% 3 17 50 100.1-109.9% 1 21 57 110-119.9% 7 18 40 120-149.9% 4 30 55 150-199.9% 4 12 43 200-550% 1 25 26 Totals 37 365 1131 Sixty-six lots (4.3%) exceeded the high estimate, two in the MPC category and twenty-eight in the WWII category. One statistic that would probably be of interest to gramsters is that 21 of the 28 bids (WWII category) that exceeded high estimates were for POW chits. I think the above will answer the question on the estimates; comparing catalog values will require each person comparing notes in his/her area of interest. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== A first page news story by David Ganz in the December 16 Numismatic News is about Congress voting to award Pope John Paul II the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Among other things in the article, Ganz points out that Harry Truman created the award in 1945 for recognition of World War II service by notable civilians. I said to myself, wow, that should be in World War II Remembered. When I got home from reading the newspaper at the coffee shop, I looked in Remembered and to my delight and slight surprise, I found that we had indeed listed the medal. We had everything correct too—as far as I can tell. I suggest that you have a look. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Well I finally am making my reservations for the Fest.
