From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: what is it worth? Newsletter 1062 Date: Tuesday, December 02, 2003 11:05 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1062 Tuesday December 2, 2003 What Is it Worth By David Seelye One of the classic questions in numismatics is; What's it Worth? Well We are about to find out the answer to that question, when used in the context of matching serial numbers. While listing my notes into the MPC data base at papermoneyworld.net I found myself with a set of 5 cent notes in GEM UNC. A series 521 and 681 5 cents to be specific. Now I have listed a fair number of notes on the data base in the recent past. Over 5,000. Yes, that right 5000. So those of you who are complaining it takes too much time to input my collection, cannot use that excuse any more! So get to it!!! Now as I carefully climb down from the pulpit, and back to the original question, WIIW. I have been fortunate to have several notes that matched. Several trades have been consummated with indeterminate pricing. This eBay listing is an invitation for all those interested to bid on the pair. If for some reason that you are not an eBayer, I am sure we can find someone that will bid for you. But this should answer what is it worth. At least in the next week. eBay item 2207811617 (Ends Dec-08-03 18:18:24 PST) - MPC Matching Serial Numbers GEM UNC 5 Cents Details of Iraq convoy attack emerge (AFP) Posted Mon, 01 Dec 2003 submitted by David Klinger Attacks on US troops in Samarra were "coordinated" and targeted two convoys transporting new Iraqi currency as part of an exchange scheme to replace old notes carrying the face of Saddam Hussein, Colonel Fredrick Rudesheim of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team Commando said on Monday. "It was a coordinated attack ... on a convoy that was delivering a significant amount of Iraqi currency," said Rudesheim. "It was a concerted effort by the enemy to deal a significant blow to coalition forces," said Rudesheim, who spoke to reporters in front of US tanks at a military base outside town. Asked about how much money was in the convoys, he declined to give a specific sum, saying only that it was a "significant" amount. The US colonel stressed that the money had already been successfully delivered when the insurgents opened fire on the convoys as they pulled away from the banks. US commanders accuse their Iraq foes of using their financial reserves not only to buy arms but also to offer cash rewards for attacks on US troops or other targets. Captain Andy Deponai said the assailants had targeted not just the two banks to which the money was delivered but also the "routes of ingress and egress." A Fateful Meeting By Joe Boling Back to the autobiographical musings; the last episode was in gram 1004 (it seems like a few weeks since the kilogram, and we are over sixty grams past that now (of course, that is under two ounces if you want to look at it from that direction)). When last we left our hero, he was in Seattle in the mid-70s. After graduating from the University of Washington with an MBA in 1973, I switched buildings and started teaching ROTC. I was supposed to go for a second tour in VN, but by that time the war was winding down and AG branch could not find a job for me there - what a disappointment (not). One of my duties with the ROTC detachment was teaching marksmanship (I had been a competitive shooter since childhood). In 1974 and 1975 I took the 4th ROTC Region rifle and pistol teams to Camp Perry (Ohio) for the national matches (we trained at Forts Lewis and Ord for a few weeks, then drove and/or flew east to Ohio). The pistol matches were first, followed by the smallbore matches, then the high-power rifle matches. During the smallbore matches (for which we had no team), I killed time with a fellow I had met through the mail a few years before - C F Schwan. He has teaching ROTC at Bowling Green University, just an hour's drive from Camp Perry (and the community that hosts the Fest!). During one of those two years (1975, I believe), Fred was building his AMC exhibit (the one he ended up selling to Ted Uhl, but not before he showed it at the Atlanta 1977 ANA convention and lost to my Meiji paper money exhibit because of an anomaly in the exhibit rules that has now been fixed). He and I discussed ways to make an exhibit portable if you had to go by air, and lit on the use of ribbons for titles and edge decorations - a technique that I still use (see gram 246). The 1975 ANA convention was in Los Angeles, and he must have been flying that year (I did not go - although many Seattle collectors chartered a bus and made a week-long party out of the trip, I was still of the frame of mind that I would rather spend my $$ on numismatic items, not hotel rooms). By 1976 I had evidently changed my mind, because I went to the COIN (Congress of International Numismatics) convention in LA that year, rooming with Scott Semans, Milt Blackburn, and another fellow I cannot remember. That was the convention at which I bought my Japan P10, the one yen first series national bank note (printed by Continental BN Co) (F+, $800), from Bill Kiszely, and my first Federal Reserve Bank of China BEPP 100 yuan (SB1071), a piece that had been split apart and repaired with glassine tape ($90), from Mrs Ting. The most interesting aspect of that convention was having the police come to the hotel room at 0700 looking for Mark Blackburn. They thought Milt was Mark, and they had a warrant for Mark (he was the son of Hal and Peggy Blackburn, dealers from Seattle, then Carmel). Mark had been in trouble off and on for a long time - I do not know what they wanted with him that day. More next week (unless something more interesting happens this week). =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I have some recollections from that first meeting with Joe Boling. Of course we looked at notes. He explained the Japanese puppet bank notes to me and showed me a group of duplicates that he had. I bought or traded for them. I not only still have them, but I still have them in the same group wrapped in the same paper in the back of a bank note box. They are waiting to be integrated into my collection. It is one of the things on my list of things to do (since 1973). =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Could you please run a short want list for me? I am in need of position # 21 notes from almost all series, seems that I have run out of other ways to collect MPC so I have had to resort to this. Not in need of any Gem notes, but no dogs either. Jack Hunter aka ragpicker@galaxycable.net Dear Jack, Well, your request might not officially meet our editorial guidelines, but it helps answer the question yesterday from Lee about low budget collecting, so we are running it. Good luck with your special collection. Editor Dear Editor, Received 5 Grams today, all 1061. Thanks so much. Will give out the extras for Christmas!! Steve Jinks Dear Steve, What a great idea. Grams for Christmas! Actually, a new delivery problem has developed. We are receiving a huge quantity of bounced Grams every day and they continue to come in 48 hours after the Gram has been sent. This seems to have started since we changed the scheme for subject lines, but that does not seem to make much sense. Any ideas?
