From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Jim Miller--gone, Gram 1061 your military money newsletter Date: Monday, December 01, 2003 10:07 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 005 - Number 1061 Monday December 1, 2003 Jim Miller, Gone From David Ganz and John Wilson James L. Miller, founding editorial director of COINage Magazine and a fixture in the American numismatic publication scene for nearly 40 years, died Saturday, November 29, after a year-long battle with throat cancer. He is survived by his wife Jill, three daughters, and many grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are for Wed., December 3 at San Buena Vista Mission in Ventura, CA. Replacement Discovery By David Seelye As AMC replacements go the Japan B series replacements are the most common, with the 10 sen readily available in UNC at the $150 to $200 price level. Even the somewhat scarce 20 yen and 100 yen B replacements surface from time to time. The Japan Series 100 A replacements are another story. The 50 sen and 1 yen are the most common. If you define common as a $500 to $750 note in VF or so. They appear on the market once or twice in a good year. The 10 sen is considerably more elusive. The high values are in a class by themselves. I was fortunate to have bought and sold a Series 100 A 10 yen at the 2002 Memphis Paper Money show. I sold it to a well known collector of MPC and AMC replacement notes for a mid 4 figure price. It was the first example reported in collections. Joe Boling told me that in the 30 years that he had been collecting, he had never seen one. The buyer had had the same experience. The replacement is illustrated in the Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates. A Series 100 A 20 yen replacement note has appeared on the market. The note is VF or so, not a particularly high grade, but still pleasant to look at. This note represents probably the only know note. It is certainly the first reported. This note now resides with it's 10 yen brother. It goes to prove, once again, that there heretofore unknown rarities still can be located now! RATION TOKENS From The E-Sylum v6#51, November 30, 2003 Wayne Homren, Editor (with permission) Sixty-one years ago this week, (November 26, 1942), U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered nationwide gasoline rationing as part of the war effort. The new rules would take effect December 1. The wartime Office of Price Administration (OPA) issued books of ration coupons and corresponding tokens. Gasoline, sugar, meat, silk, nylon and other items were rationed. Below are as couple web pages discussing rationing and the tokens. Can anyone locate a more detailed discussion of the OPA tokens on the web? http://history.acusd.edu/gen/WW2Timeline/OPA.html http://www.youth.net/memories/hypermail/0199.html =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Jim Miller was a gentleman and friend of military money collecting. He took no active part in the hobby (military numismatics hobby), but he did little things for us. In 1995 we sent a review copy of WWII Remembered to Coinage. He liked the book and recognized its many unique aspects. He called me and asked me to write a story about the creation of the book which of course I did. He and I served together on the publications committee of the American Numismatic Association for a few years. He was generous, insightful, and just a good guy. Jim, you are missed. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Was Wondering if you got my two emails, the one sent in error and the correct one? How do I contact so one to become a member of M2C2? Do you gentlemen still have any chats? Have you had any spare time to develop some ideas on collecting areas for my limited income? I saw in the Gram that the Bowanna (wife) was making you a porter, my wife always wants me to, but this year I have had bronchitis, so didn't have to visit each store in town, starting a five in the morning. Thanks, Lee "Little Lee" Smith PS: If you ever find I'm asking to many questions and taking up to much of your free time, please let me know. Dear Lee, Free time? What is that? I suspect that some Gramsters will answer some of your questions. I especially look forward to reading about ways to collect on a limited budget. Creativity abounds among Gramsters.
