It is now up and running on our website. You can go directly to the catalog at http://www.rosenblumcoins.com/mailbids/mb33e/index.html. Attic Finds Bill McNease While going through an old suitcase in the attic I came up with some interesting finds related to MPC. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/Orders.jpg This is the link to the first one and it names me as Pay Officer for Officers and Enlisted men A-L. To help on the Army lingo-FNO means Following Named Officer. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/conversion%20officer.jpg This link is the one assigning me as MPC conversion officer. And last, something I found on the internet that was news to me. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/images/conversion%20date.jpg It is the regulation that states that all issues of MPC could be converted no later than 30 Sep 1980 if found in a soldier's effects. The soldier had to have be listed as KIA or MIA prior to the date of conversion of the series that he would have been issued. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I hate shopping for shoes. I could probably dig into my closet and find some that are thirty years old although that would be an exception. Usually, I wear a pair of shoes until they are unsightly, uncomfortable, and possibly even dangerous. Then I wear them for another six months or year. Then I keep them in my closet for another ten years or so, but never wearing them. My shoe exploits made it into the pages of the Bank Note Reporter on at least two occasions. Once (election day 2000, I think) I had to search for shoe stores along the interstate that I was driving enroute to a JSG Boggs opening. There was a huge rainstorm and the holes in both shoes made me miserable and restricted me to my car. The other time was when I was at an event in Europe with attractive, but otherwise terrible shoes. Again, I had to do emergency shopping. A few weeks ago, Judy decided that she wanted to begin a fitness exercise program. She wanted the health benefits and she wanted spousal togetherness. I can hear you snickering now, but there is a well-known Gramster with a similar tale. Mrs. Gramster bought camouflaged clothing and other accessories so that she could accompany her husband turkey hunting. That is, wild birds with guns, not supermarket shopping for Thanksgiving. She went at least once. Of course before Judy could begin her fitness program, she had to buy new shoes ($100). Three weeks (and four workouts) later (Friday), she decided that the new shoes were not correct for her program. That is how I came to spend Friday afternoon in the shoe store. In spite of saying that I hate to shop for shoes, Ron’s Shoe Store (actually named Arthur’s Shoe Tree) in Sandusky, Ohio (15 miles from Fest central) is a joy to visit. The proprietor, Ron, is a wonder to watch. Think of me talking to a group about MPC, and you can imagine Ron selling shoes in his store. While he worked a family, he metered some shoes to Judy and tolerated my attempts at humor. Usually I have a book if we are going to visit Arthur’s, but not today. Eventually, the family was finished and Ron ran the cash register. The machine sounded like the band at Radio City Music Hall. If it was not a state record for shoe purchases, I am surprised. Somehow the matriarch of the family mentioned silver dollars while presenting multiple credit cards to cover the shoe selections. Possibly she had a sliver dollar in her purse. She went on how her grandfather had given her silver dollars when she was a girl. We have all heard—or told—those stories. The surprise was the response by Ron. He began a conversation about coins as easily as he did about shoes. I listened as he quoted prices for proof sets. Ultimately, the family was able to get all of the shoes out of the store and Ron focused his aim, er, attention, on us. How many shoes can one woman try on? It is one of the great questions. While Ron hauled boxes, pinched toes, and gave the history of New Balance, I played with my Fest coin, turning it over between my fingers (you never know when you will need your Fest coin). He asked what it was. I handed it to him and inserted a few coin comments. He described the many different things that he likes. Silver dollars, half dollars, bla, bla, bla, paper money. Paper money!? Yes, he said, he actually likes paper money the best. I could/can hardly believe it. We talked more about paper. He showed me the liar’s poker note that he carries in his pocket! He does not have any MPC, but he does know what it is. By now Judy has made her choice ($150, but they look fast) and she is waiting for ME. I went to the car and took a copy of the MPC book from the trunk. (A collector’s edition of course since, Judy went for the best shoes). I told Ron that I would lend it to him until the Fest. At that time he could return it or pay for it. He promised to take very good care of it, but I explained to him that I did not want him to take good care of it. I wanted him to read, study and wear it out. From the Fest coin conversation, he knew about the Fest and promised to attend. I explained about the Friday bourse that I knew would interest him and promised to talk to him more about the remainder of the event later. I also took his email. This is the first copy of the Gram that he has received. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Howdy, Fr-editor! I note that the Italian AMC 10-lire which are the subject of David's article were both printed by the Forbes company. Did they do the black-overprinting? If you recall the 100-lire error I originally had, and which you illustrate in WW II Remembered, had a severely shifted black overprint while the serial numbers were properly placed... Where was the black overprinted? At Forbes? At BEP? Just a'wonderin'... Jay in Garrison, TX Dear Editor, I have a question for you relating to the MPC database. Do you only want notes entered, that is owned by a known person, or do you also accept entry of notes seen at shows and/or in auction rooms? So far I have not entered any notes, but I have a list of MPCs, that I have seen at these places. Very best Flemming Maybe you would have gotten more comments about the Smokies trip if Gram 1044 would have gotten here. I have talked to another person who also never saw it. Grams 1043 and 1045 are here but no 1044. --Ski Dear Ski, I guess that it is fitting that I procrastinated a few weeks in publishing this particular complaint/problem. Non delivery is a never ending problem. We continue to suggest that Gramsters create alternate addresses to receive back up copies of the Gram. As you know there is no charge for the extra copies. In the meantime, I am extending you subscription by two issues.
