By Doug Bell, webmaster The MPCdatabase has received its 20,000th report. Yes, we now have over 20,000 notes. The record note was a Series 641 $1 (serial number J01887938J, position 26). The note was entered by David Seelye. The next threshold will be 25,000 notes, but every single note is important. Please enter your notes; your collection, your inventory, your duplicates. You can also enter notes that are not yours. If you see notes at a show, on line, or in another collection, YOU can (should) enter them in the database. Go to www.papermoneyworld.net =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I mentioned earlier that the Lyn Knight St. Louis catalog was a research bonanza. A highlight in this regard is the two 50 franco notes for Tanger (lot 1318). In WWII Remembered these are listed under neutral Spain. The remarkable thing about the two notes in the auction is that while they appear nearly identical, they are different in the most fundamental way. The major legends are different, apparently indicating different issuing authorities. The two legends are Junta de Servicios Municipales and Servicios Municipales. In Remembered we listed three dates of the Junta…. issue in three denominations. The Knight catalog quite rightly pointed out the two different legends. The opportunity to study these two notes was one of my biggest motivations for going to the auction. The Servicios…. Issue in the auction was dated August 1941. That is one of the dates that we listed in Remembered for the other issue. Now I am afraid that I might have seen these notes in the past (or even owned them), but did not notice the different legend! Furthermore, I now notice that Pick lists these about the same way that we did in Remembered (incorrectly by ignoring the Servicios…. issue), but adds a 2 franco denomination. We need to unscramble this issue. What to do? The only thing that I can do is ask you to report any and all of these notes that you might have. Please pay special attention to the legend and the date but also the series and serial numbers. Ultimately, we probably would like to see copies of all available pieces. Most were 1970 and on issues, but did have a couple of WWII Remembered items. I’m sure you probably have gotten some of these updates, but if not… p. 224, 3rd paragraph: Have a 1000 rupees certificate with an issue date of 14 Feb 47, 5 months later than the date you have listed. p. 225 SB 1643 Has a serial number of 251714; 60,000 greater than the number listed. SB 1644 Has a serial number of 560655; 35,000 greater than the number listed. SB 1646c Has a serial number of 529665; 140,000 greater than the number listed. Also, has the six-line note on back. All have the block in the form of letter over number. Also, as a slight difference, the fourth line on the front of the 50 rupees piece says “with the terms of the Notification number” while the other two pieces have “Notifications numbers” (both terms plural). p. 226 SB 1682 Can confirm this piece, block B0 SB 1684 Can confirm this piece, block D0 Cheers, Mark C.
