From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1038 Date: Wednesday, October 29, 2003 12:31 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1038 Wednesday October 29, 2003 Adventures of a Dirty Old Man By The Master Sergeant Daniel I am up at my usual 5AM this morning and working on emails. The best time to work on emails here in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is after midnight and before 9AM. At other times, the speed can be incredibly slow, slow, slow. It is amazing that someday I would write that I was flying to Hanoi for a few days, but that is what I am doing this morning. I will be leaving the house about 9AM for Tan Son Nhat International Airport so I can be processed through on time for a 11:40AM flight on Vietnam Airlines. One of my nieces, Thao, who is a university junior majoring in English and Tourism, will be traveling with me. She will be my translator at the insistence of my inlaws here. And we are flying instead of taking the train for me to see the country because she wants to be a stewardess and this will be her first flying experience. She is dead stop beautiful at 22 and the dirty old man looks I get when I am with her are almost life threatening. So at times, she will walk a little behind me so not to attract too much attention on me, but she will still get some head turning stares from Vietnamese males of all ages! I have not shopped anywhere else for MPC except Dung's and it appears I have found what he has in his stock. But I do have more paper boxes to look through and more could be stuck between other paper. Has anyone found a serial or position yet that they need? That is it for today. I have to get packing for my trip to Hanoi!! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== On Monday I mentioned visiting a militaria shop and buying a few things. Since they are now on my desk, I will discuss some of them before they get covered. First there is a 5 cent chit (Globe Ticket Company), serial number 378666. It is in ticket format meaning that it was printed in a long roll and separated at the ends rather than along the long edges in classic chit style. However, it was good for 5 cents in trade so it certainly is a chit in my mind. The most interesting part is the back. Usually backs are blank so it is unusual just having the printing. The text on the back is key. “THE BREAKERS” NAVY RECREATION CENTER HONOLULU, T.H. Of course the TH means territory of Hawaii. Unfortunately that only dates the chit to before 1960. The Breakers was a recreation center during WWII (it might still be) so that is also a clue. With a google search I found the following wonderful site http://libweb.hawaii.edu/hwrd/HWRD_html/HWRD45.html This is one of the photos on the site showing navy men at the Breakers on VE Day! http://libweb.hawaii.edu/hwrd/HWRD_html/hwrd_gifs/740f.gif The chit is interesting and nice enough in its own right, but how can I confirm that it was issued during the war? I tried some other searches and without much luck. Possibly you can help? =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, AOL 9.0 working fine except for a couple of minor glitchs. It now has a spam folder for obvious spam and also it includes key words you manage that spammers and others from the sewers of life use. Overall, a good improvement but it takes a bit to get used to it. NS Dear Gram, I tried AOL 9.0. It literally crashed my computer. I immediately went back to 8.0. AOL was totally unsympathetic. I would change providers if it weren't such a pain. Warner (via AOL instant messagner) Dear Gramsters, [Re definition of currency] The editor said "It certainly should not be used to contrast something with coins." Which is EXACTLY why I did not mention either coins or paper money - I said "the circulating monies." That is comprehensive, and if the "tokens" are also issues of the competent (I said legitimate) authority, then they are part of the circulating monies and are also currency. The tokens that I had in mind as being used at the sufferance of the "authority" are club tokens, club chits, sutler tokens, merchant scrip, and so forth - items that are NOT included in the emissions of the "authority." Joe Dear Esteeemed Editor, I have decided to call Dung's MPC the "Rat Hole MPC Hoard" because it has a BUNCH of ugly looking pieces in it! I finished entering all of his MPC pieces so far. I write "so far" because I found seven more during a search of six more large boxes of paper financial instruments. I have about twenty more to go at his shop, still have the rest of my sources in the city, and Hanoi is coming up in a few days. I was very happy to read that the input I previously sent in has been added to the database. It all belongs to Van Dung Shop (coded VDS in the spreadsheet) and unless I have graded a piece, consider it Poor until I update the list. This will probably be the last update for a few days, so, for those of you looking at it, enjoy yourselves. Tomorrow, I am going to the Sunday morning meeting of the stamp "club" here in Ho Chi Minh City. There is almost anything made of paper offered for sale or trade there, so I am hoping for more MPC and, of course, my precious stuff. You will read about it in a couple of more Grams. And then Sunday night, I am going to a wedding of one of Dung's cousins. This will be a GOOD time and everyone there who knows me will be trying to get me drunk. I am going to hide in a corner and watch the action! I hope. That is it for a couple of days. Enjoy the "Rat Hole MPC Hoard." The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Sarg and Gramsters, This may be a rerun of this letter. I got a little confused and I figured that it is better to duplicate than omit.
