From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1036 Date: Monday, October 27, 2003 1:57 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1036 Monday October 27, 2003 Marriage Consumated As reported in the Gram, Bill McNease and an unnamed collector identified notes in their respective collections with both having the same serial number. This match was made by using the MPC data base at papermoneyworld.net. Bill McNease reports that he has been successful in rescuing the Series 471 $1 from the other collector to mate with his own Series 681 $1. The two notes now cohabitate in the McNease collection. In an exclusive Gram interview McNease reports that he patiently, but persistently pursued the 471 $1 and finally obtained it by making the former custodian an offer that he could not refuse. McNease stated that he is now thinking about what it will take to find a third note with the same serial number! He further reported that he will provide scans of the happy pair to the Gram. Fest V Bourse Announced By David Seelye, bourse chairman MPCFest V will feature an innovative new bourse. Most of Friday will be a bourse (in the past we had a two hour bourse for the entire weekend). This new, expanded bourse will be open to the public. This means that collectors can attend even if they do not plan to attend the entire Fest. Likewise, dealers may participate in the bourse even if they are not attending the Fest. Finally, collectors who visit the bourse will not only not be charged to attend, but will be PAID $5 (Fest or Federal Reserve) to attending!! The public bourse will be from Noon until 7PM on Friday 5 March 2004 will be the "formal" time for "dealers" to display their wares the more the merrier! The bourse fee will defray some of the costs associated with the event. If you have an interest in setting up, please contact me. The bourse is not an exclusive event. All those with an interest in setting up, please contact me. The official "Bourse" is not seen by me as a method of limiting the buying/selling/trading that occurs during the MPCFest between attendees. But as a way of increasing the participation by "mainstream" paper money dealers (with MPC and related materials in their stock ) in a familiar format. Most dealers have a hard time understanding just what takes place, much less the concept of a good time and camaraderie, with commercialism as an afterthought. Your comments are welcome! Bourse chairman David E. Seelye coinmay@rochester.rr.com =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I am at my branch office in Dallas (aka Kinko’s). I have been here for a few days while you have been Gramless. Sorry. This was a short business trip. The business was completed successfully, but as you know, I try to make a collecting adventure out of everything and this aspect of the trip was also successful (if a little chaotic and crazy). On Friday a new collector friend and I visited a local militaria shop where I was able to spend some money and even obtain a Territory of Hawaii chit that will probably find its way into World War II Remembered. He had some other chits too, but they are in the car so I will have to describe them later. My new friend now has a challenge coin. I met with Frank Clark (seminar II veteran) a few hours later. He had his challenge coin, but upon inspection I found that it is still a beautiful unc. He has not been carrying it. Unsatisfactory, Frank. Friday evening I spent with Doug Bell. Doug had his challenge coin (he did not the last time that I visited him in Oklahoma. We had a great time looking at notes and chatting. He dragged me to a local Mexican restaurant where I overindulged. Saturday I met with Fester Bill McNease. Of course we also had a great time looking at notes and swapping stories. It was my great pleasure to see his new matched serial number pair. Besides the obvious interest in them, they point out the importance of entering your notes in the MPC database. Certainly pairs belong together, but it is also an opportunity to make a dreg note into an outstanding treasure! On Saturday night Bill (and his daughter (or was that his wife?)) dragged me out to what kind of restaurant? Mexican of course. Just as the night before I was obliged to be polite and over indulge. The two Mexican restaurants in two states in two days were remarkably different in décor but the food and company in both cases was exceptional. Thank you to my several hosts. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, I just received an email from Khaled Abdul Aziz Ali at coin1and1banknote@yahoo.com. With his quantity pricing, maybe several Gramsters can get together and buy them, or one Gramster dealer can acquire them and start selling them. Good luck! The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Gram, Great information on the two MPC notes having the same serial numbers. Quite an achievement!! However, I noticed there was no mention that the block numbers ALSO MATCHED!!! To me...that would make the notes even more rarer and more desirable!! PK6 Howdy, y'all! Regarding the matching-serial-number MPC's, does the serial numbering process also mean they would have matching position numbers, too (as these do)? This inquiring mind wants to know!! Jay in Garrison, TX Dear Guys, Thanks for writing. Sorry that I did not publish your letters when the first report was published. However, they work out nicely today with the report of the marriage of the two notes. You have to think about this numbering thing. Yes, it can make your head hurt. If notes with the same serial number are of the same denomination (or group of denominations) they will also have the same position number. A fractional note and a high denomination (>$1) will not have the same position number with one (possibly some) exceptions. Think about this. I hope that someone will write in to explain the predictable exception.
