From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 1034 Date: Thursday, October 23, 2003 7:26 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 1034 Thursday October 23, 2003 Some CU (Crumpled Up) MPC Discovered! by The Master Sergeant Daniel My wife departed last night (local time) on ANA [not American Numismatic Association] for Tokyo and Dulles airports. This morning, I started out with a trip to a travel agency to buy my tickets for a trip to Hanoi. I am flying on Vietnam Airlines and not taking the train because I have been forced to take a very beautiful 22 year old niece with me as a translator/guide. Life is hell! Her name is Thao and she is a junior at the University of Ho Chi Minh City majoring in English and Tourism. She wants to become a stewardess so we shall see if she still wants the job after her first flight. We will be flying to Hanoi on Wednesday morning and returning to HCMC on Saturday at about noon. I have been told there is some MPC in Hanoi so it should be relatively unsearched. We shall see. Today, I went to the Van Dung Shop and started some serious searching through his stock. I ran across an MPC $20 and asked him if he had more. He did not want to say anything. I asked his saleslady what was the problem and she asked him in Vietnamese. He said it was in such ratty condition, he was embarrassed to show it to me. I said "Bring it out"!! There are several hundred pieces or more in his stash and 90% of them are in good to lower conditions. But there might be a filler for some of you, and I am typing up an MS-Excel list with a few pieces everyday until everything is in it, and so it can placed in the database, if deemed useful. I have attached today's input to this email and it is going to the MPCGram, Jim Aitken, Harold Kroll and Doug Bell. If any of you want to be added to the list so you will see it before it is published in the MPCGram, please email me at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com and I will add you to it. All of the MPC in the spreadsheet is owned by Dung and you will see "VDS" for Van Dung Shop on each line for now. At a later date, you will see other letters there for anything I find at other dealers. If you are interested in any of them, please email me and I will ask the owner for a price. I will bring whatever you buy back to the USA with me in late November and mail them out after my return. That is all for this report from across the Big Pond in Southeast Asia. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I received my copy of The Planchette Report #2 today. Doug Bell is doing a very nice job with this I must say. He is combining interesting and useful information from a variety of sources. When Doug wanted to start this publication, I tried to talk him out of it! I told him that no one in their right mind would want to get involved with a periodical. The deadlines would be murder (1034 deadlines broken here at Gram central). Nonetheless, he insisted on going ahead and I am happy that he did. Commencing with this issue you can receive an intaglio MPC souvenir card and I must also say that this item is nice. Kevin Neidy is responsible for this enhancement. Altogether a good job, guys. Thanks. You can find information about subscribing to the Report at www.papermoneyworld.net or writing to Doug at doug@papermoneyworld.net. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Note to Marcus Turner and others: ANA is not changing exhibit categories. The twenty-five classes in use for the big summer conventions are still in place (those awards are all endowed - changing them would be difficult). What I published in my column Tuesday was the new exhibit categories for the SPRING conventions, which heretofore had only one huge open class, with only one winner and a pair of runners-up. Now there will be six class winners, and also the BoS. Aside from these, before and now, is the National Coin Week exhibit award, which uses entirely different judging criteria. I expect to send the rules for the 2004 conventions to ANA on Thursday. They will print and mail them shortly. Joe Dear Joe, Thanks, but please spare us—do not send the rules to the Gram! Editor Dear Editor, I do not want to beat a dead horse - but - I have more questions to pose to my Editor and to all Gramsters concerning the new Iraqi currency. On one web site I read: "the new currency is US military occupation money." Maybe it is - Iraq does not yet have a new constitution, and the new currency was produced and issued under the sole authority of Paul Bremer, acting for the US government. If the new dinar is not occupation currency, what is it? Liberation currency? Or what? What do you think? David Klinger Dear David, As you can imagine, I have an opinion, but I would rather wait to read some of your opinions to air mine. I will use those as my justification so please tell us what you think.
