The rule against mentioning the value of exhibited material is rescinded. Set-up on Friday (Portland)/Wednesday (Pittsburgh) starts at 7:00am and installation of all exhibits must be completed by 10:00am. This will allow the public to enter the exhibit area as soon as the convention opens. Placement of all competitive exhibits in one large group at the spring show (Portland this year) has been eliminated. Classes, such as are used at the anniversary (summer) conventions, will be used. However, the class titles and scopes are radically different from summer conventions. They are: Class 1 - History and politics. Exhibits dealing with historical or political events or persons of a country or region. Class 2 - Economics. Exhibits dealing with monetary and financial systems or economic events (such as panics and inflations). Class 3 - Geography. Exhibits that describe natural or cultural assets, the distribution of populations, or exploration. Class 4 - Religion. Exhibits dealing with systems of religion or religious symbols and artifacts. Class 5 - The arts. Exhibits that explore any aspect of fine or applied arts. Class 6 - Science. Exhibits dealing with theoretical or applied science, including the technology of manufacturing numismatic items. So, an MPC exhibit could be tailored to any of these except maybe class 4. An existing exhibit that was not oriented specifically on one of these would have to pick the one that is closest. In any event, if more than one class is suitable for an exhibit, the exhibitor gets to say which one it goes into. Questions? First and foremost, exhibiting at major conventions and small shows can be and usually is fun. It provides opportunities to show off what you have and possible find some things that you would like to have. It also provides research opportunities. If might force you to do some research that you had put off. It might get you a critique from a judge (or public viewer) that helps with the research. A viewer might offer you something that fits into your exhibit. It can even help you sell things if you are so inclined (or even if you are not). Over the Fourth of July weekend in 1976, Ted Uhl bought my exhibit of Allied military currency intact at the Clearwater, Florida show where I was interviewing Robert Branagan about barter units for occupied Germany. I may have told that story in more depth in the past (the Uhl story AND the Brannigan stories), and I will probably tell them again! This radical new scheme is, well, radical. It will also be interesting. Joe and I have spent lots of hours talking about this type of approach. I may come back to the subject, but I do not have the energy to discuss it now. We can be sure that Joe will keep us informed about it. Joe is absolutely correct that an MPC (or other military numismatics) exhibit could be made to fit many and multiple categories. It would be a hoot to have MPC exhibits win five of the six awards at an event! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, (just for your info) [Paul, if that meant not for publication, well, sorry—ed] Thanks for the nice words about my article. I enjoy writing about the hunt for notes. I think collector experiences are the most valuable learning tools for others. I have met you before in Memphis. I have your book and last year, I think I purchased some food coupons from your table. I have been a MPC collector for years, even before all of this "fest stuff.” We have many mutual friends, Leo May, Tony Pisciotta, Joel and Neil Shafer, Austin and Amanda Sheheen, Hugh Shull, and the list goes on. At Memphis, you can find me hanging out with Phil Phipps when I am not covering the floor in search of notes. He is a close friend and a guy who will make you laugh. If you know him, don't hold it against me that I consider him a friend. Squirrels gather around him because he is such a nut!! My main collecting interests are in British Commonwealth notes, African, Caribbean and Islamic countries. I try to make it to the FUN show each year as well as Memphis. I will make it a point to say hello the next time I see you. Yes, you will never know the impact the gram has on collectors. I check everyone for new info. By the time the same info is printed in the newspapers, mags, it is old news. Keep up the good work!!!!!
