======================================================= MPC Gram ====================================================== Vol 1 Number 73 July 26, 2000 News and Views Ready for prime time (?) A few nights ago in chat, we discussed sending a news release to the Bank Note Reporter and other traditiona/print publications about the gram and chat. Brad Shotgun volunteered to draft the news release which he has done. I have altered it some and asked Brad to include a testominal if he was will which he was (gulp). The text is included below for your comments, suggestions, criticisms. Please send them in so that we can make alterations and send this baby out. Military payment certificate collectors have gone a little mad. In February they had an all MPC show, now they have daily MPC chat and a daily (well, not quite) newsletter! The MPC Gram is the daily, upcoming events, letters to the editor, and a trading post area where collectors can sell MPC and similar items at no charge. Subject matter covered includes more than just MPC. Allied military currency (AMC) and all other types of military and related emergency money are subject to inclusion. Unfortunately, the gram also sometimes includes the editors attemps at humor. Best of all, the newsletter is free, but is is distributed only by e-mail. Requests for subscriptions should be sent to MPCgram@papermoneyworld.com. A common subject in the gram is discussion of events from the previous day's activities in the MPC Chat. MPC chat is the electronic discussion held every night at 10pm eastern time on the subject of MPC and military money. The MPC Chat Lounge is one of the services provided by papermoneyworld.com, the leader in developing internet-based paper money collecting services. It is an interactive meeting place for MPC collectors around the world to gather and discuss details about military payment certificates. Usually the chat is an informal and unstructured meeting where the only requirement is an interest in the subject matter and courteous behavior. Normally, business is not transacted on chat, but a few transactions have been conceived there. Occassionally, special events have been staged in chat and others are planned as the concept evolves. Brad Peacock, an MPC and small size note collector states, "This is a great meeting place! It was designed by collectors and is maintained by collectors, not some no-name internet company that doesn't understand what collecting is all about!" The MPC chat lounge is the pilot for other specialty chat areas. Rooms are available for Confederate, national bank note, check collecting and other specialties too. Leaders are needed for these areas. Collectors who might be interested in leading these chat rooms or creating others should contact the web master, doug@papermoneyworld.com. Anyone interested in participateing in chat need only go to http://www.papermoneyworld.com and follow the insturctions. End of release As most of you know, the condo inspector and I are back from our journey. Man was I tired (and sore too). It was one of those jobs that someone just has to do. Thank you for your various encouragements and patience while I struggled with a six time zone change. Wiz is working on a new chat program. Several people have tried it and have good reports. The most important improvements that I know of are the it support Macintosh and that it does not require downloading of any software. That means that we can chat from Kinkos and similar places along the highway! (My wife will be really happy about that you can be sure). Wiz has been testing it and is arranging a mac test. We will announce "conversion" to the "new new chat" here at least several times before it takes place. ======================================================== Letters Hey Fred, If we did'nt have to come back from paradise sometime, we'd never know there was something to look forward to. The MPC Gram name sounds just fine. It is readily identifiable and nice & short. Question/comment. there any reverse order collecting going on - like 76543210? Now, I realize that some of the numbers are too high for feasibility. But there could be something like 000987654, etc.? I have never thought about the weird possibilities -- I've been too busy trying to find the ones in the short & long set that I don't have. Now, since you mentioned it, I have started looking at the scrip that I see in a different manner. Thanks for complicating my life -it is a good complication. Hope your return from paradise isn't too traumatic. rusty Dear Rusty, Paradise is a junk box, a long forgotten envelope of notes, a new variety, or a new serial number for the replacement survey! Yes, there certainly is interest in "reverse" numbers. I should have mentioned this in the ladder discussion, but as you say, there are no real reverse MPC ladders but even 00654321 would be a nice find. One of my own favorites in this area is the idea of finding the very LAST number for a note, the inverse of serial number one. This is MUCH harder to find. There was little motivation at the time of issue to save this note (compared to the number 1) and it is not recognizable to collectors without a book. Phil Goldstein has started a survey to find the highest reported SN for each issue of MPC. I think that this is important research, first because it might help us find some discrepancies or give us some insight to number of notes ISSUED as opposed to printed. The other thing is that it may help us find a last note. Editor How about Mil-Gram? Covers all military, MPC and everything in between. Or Mil-Mail? Nah! I like Mil-Gram better but you will most likely come up with something better. Neil S. Dear Mr. S., Perhaps mil E gram, or mil-graEm? More thoughts and ideas are still needed. Thanks for writing. Editor ======================================================== Calendar In this section we will highlight MPC chat, MPC Fest, and MPC gram events. Other events will be mentioned as they get close. For planning purposes see the papermoneyworld.com calendar of events. The next major show is the American Numismatic Association Convention (August 9-13). This year the convention will be in Philadelphia. 25 years ago the ANA convention was one of the major events for paper money. Now with the development of so many successful paper money shows (and of course the MPC Fest), its importance has diminished, but it is still an important show. Because it is such a big and important show, you cannot help but find some good paper there. Marv Mericle's great MPC collection will NOT be on display as promissed because of family and administration problems. We are certainly sorry to hear about that, but hope that all goes well with Marv and that we will see the exhibit again soon. I will be there the entire time and will be pleased to chat MPC with you! ==================================================== Trading post Your classified advertisement for items for sale will be run here for free. I am pleased to offer a large size $25 bond (#226). This is an uncancelled bond which means that the redemption value is about $125 but it is not redeemable except to a rightfull heir. But, heck, we do not want to redeem, we want to collect. This is real nice piece issued to a fellow in Michigan. It was folded in the center but is otherwise real nice. This is the much more desirable large-size bond; your for $100 delivered. fred@papermoneyworld.com.
