====================================================== MPC Gram ======================================================= Series 001 Number 90 Aug 18, 2000 News and Views The following testimonial about the ANA convention is from Bill Y, coinpro. I think that you will like it. I also think that it confirms what I reported from the show. Enjoy. Well I just returned home from the ANA show and I am pleased to report that I made some great finds. I was there two days, thursday & saturday. Picked up about a dozen or so notes on thursday...nothing outstanding, but I was able to fill a few slots...got a 461 5$ and that completed the 461 series for me. Best purchase of the day though was WWII Remembered...what a book!! Saturday was a more productive day. While on the bourse floor I heard my name paged overhead and learned that I was the winning bidder on three of the lots in which I had put bids on thursday! Lot 4...complete series 481, Lot 5...complete series 521 less the 5$ note. The fractionals are nice and even the 1$ note grades UNC. The 10$ note grades VF. AND Lot #6...the 541 fractionals and 1$ note. Interesting to note that the 50 cent note in this series has the cutting lines showing in the bottom right corner and bottom left border. The position number is 76. Well, as they say....winning isn't everything...so I continued on with looking for more mpc to buy. The first note I purchased on saturday was a series 591 10$ that grades fine but has a light ink mark on the face. Surprisingly it does not really detract from the eye appeal of the note. At 50.00 it really looked attractive! A little later I found a series 661 20$ note that grades F+ (In my opinion just missing a VF grade, but an attractive note despite the grade). It was marked at 140.00, but I closed the deal at 120.00. Probably not a great price, but I couldn't find anything close to it for the money. Throughout the day I purchased some more notes to help reach my goal of completing a set...a 591 10 cent CU, 50 cent & 1$ notes in fine (Hey, the price was right and I can always upgrade later!). One of my final purchases of the day was a 641 10$ Replacement note, SN: J00415434 which grades a strong VF, perhaps XF (depending on whether you are the buyer or the seller). > Overall I did pretty well. I got about a dozen notes closer to completing a set (22 notes away...some of them common) and I upgraded quite a few others. More importantly I met some of the people with whom I do business on eBay, such as Mike Cummings, Ken Barr, and David Seeyle just to mention a few. It's nice to see the faces that go with the names! I also met Joe Boling, Neil Shafer, Ian Marshall, Leo May, and Chet Krause. What GREAT people! The highlight for me, though, was meeting the man behind the books and his wife. Sometimes you can tell whether you like someone in the instant you meet them. Fred and Judy Schwan are two of those people. To all of the above add a room full of wonderful coins, such as the 1804 Silver Dollar, a set of 4$ Gold Stellas, unique Pattern coins, treasures recovered from the shipwreck SS Central America...(remember, I am new to MPC collecting, but have been a numismatist for 27 years)...; I wasn't just a kid in a candy store, I was a kid in Willie Wonka's Chocolate > Factory! > What a show! > > Bill Yanchick > 'coinpro' ======================================================== Mail Call Dear Editor, enjoy the MPC gram. Still miffed that even though I have collected MPC for years that I never got an opportunity to get a set of the 691 and 701. Some dealers got that opportunity, not all the collectors. Not a member of the "old boy" network I guess. signed, sour grapes. Dear Mr. Grapes, On the final night of the Democratic Party Convention, I guess that I can say "I feel your pain." First, let me say, that I was not an insider on this and that much remains to be learned and reported. The original source (dubbed deep source by me (I think)) wanted the sets to go to collectors and overall I think that the guys whom he selected did a good job, not perfect by any means but good. The sets sold out rather quickly as was expected so it was certain that some collectors would be left out in the cold. I am sorry that you were one. I think that right now you can get an 8 piece set for only a modest price jump over the orginal price, but I am not certain. Some sets are going to be sold openly in the next few months, that too should be interesting. Of course it is always possible that you will get to buy a set cheaper than the others! Who knows. Thanks for the nice comment about the gram and the letter. We look foward to hearing from you again. Dear Mr. Grapes,
On the final night of the Democratic Party Convention, I guess that I can say "I feel your pain." First, let me say, that I was not an insider on this and that much remains to be learned and reported.
